8 Skincare Ingredients You Should Avoid

With so many skin products in the market, it’s not possible to choose what’s perfect for you and what’s not. But as guest contributor Sabrina shows, few substances are best avoided. Which are these substances? Keep reading to discover…

Get Aware

1. Parabens
There’s been lots of buzz in the media recently over the harmful unwanted effects of parabens and many skin-care lines are coming out with paraben-free products.

Too long now, parabens are actually used as a product preservative and unfortunately, they are generally not tagged on packaging. When selecting a deodorant or even face skin care cream, make sure to search deeper and check out the complete component list online.

Continuous use of parabens may cause men to become infertile and women’s hormones to become imbalanced. Even more, parabens are actually discovered inside female breast cancer tumors.

1. Dioxin
Like parabens, this toxic ingredient is often left off the labels. Anti-bacterial components like triclosan, polyethylene glycol, emulsifiers and also ethoxylated cleansers often contain dioxins.

The results of dioxin can be very damaging. Long term use can lead to cancer, reduced immune functioning and nervous system issues. Dioxin can also cause birth defects when used by pregnant women. Most awful case scenario; it can cause a miscarriage.

3. Free Radicals
The title may seem vague, but many sunscreens consist of chemical substances that enhance the production of free-radicals. Free-radicals cause DNA damage and cancer, so check components like avobenzone, benzophenone, ethoxycinnamate and PABA.

4. F,D And C Color Pigments
Synthetic colors from coal tar can deposit toxins in the skin and cause skin irritation. Constant absorption causes oxygen depletion, that has been known to cause death. Studies suggest they are carcinogenic as well.

5. Benzoyl Peroxide
You have no doubt noticed this component listed before. It’s a common component in many acne-fighting products, but has serious side-effects. Benzoyl Peroxide has been discovered to promote the growth of tumors because it works like a mutagen. This mutagen causes DNA damage in not only humans, but animal cells also.

Benzoyl Peroxide is harmful via inhalation, not just absorption. Inhalation can result in epidermis or respiratory discomfort , so resist the urge to sniff it.

6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
If you’re searching for buying a product that foams, keep a keen eye for this component. Present in foamy skin-care products, car washes, engine degreasers and floor cleaners, SLS can cause skin irritation, eye damage, hard breathing, diarrhea and even death.

7. Phthalates
Often difficult to find on labels, this component can cause liver and kidney damage, cause early breast enhancement in both women and men, reduce male sperm counts and cause birth defects. Fortunately, most US, Canadian and EU companies are removing this component from their products.

8. Quaternium-15
Used as a preservative, quaternium-15 is not cancer-causing in and of itself but breaks down to release formaldehyde, which the EPA classifies as a probable human carcinogen.

Because it’s also an allergen, quaternium-15 can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive skin. And if you’re allergic to formaldehyde, chances are you’re also allergic to quaternium-15.

Don’t be daunted by your skin product component lists; or lack thereof. Be product-smart and do the best you can to avoid potentially harmful components. Your skin and body will thank you! 🙂
